The arguments of the Bush administration start to feel turned russet

The climatologists persist and sign : one notes well a total reheating of planet since the end of the XXe century and this one most important would be observed since 2000 years. A new study, carried out by the American Michael E. Mann and the British Philips D. Jones, thus dismounts the wait and see sales leaflet of the government of George W. Bush. The Bush team melts her rejection of the protocol of Kyoto on certain scientific studies disputing the existence of a reheating of human origin.

One of them was published at the beginning of year in the very serious review Climate Research. Its authors, Willie Soon and Sallie Baliunas, denied there the gravity of the phenomenon and considered it comparable with other hot episodes observed during the last millenium (To read our article). Work of Mann and Jones dismounts this assertion since they underline the exceptional character of the current reheating. Published in the review Geophysical Review Letters, the study entitled “Total surfaces temperature over the past two millennia” is based on recordings of temperatures carried out in several areas of the Northern hemisphere over the 2000 last years.

These annual statements of temperature are from now on possible using indirect fossil indices by analyzing the chemical compositions of the marine and lake sediments or the deep layers of the glaciers. For these authors, the extent of the reheating observed since about thirty year largely exceeds that of medieval radoucissement which the Earth between the years 800 and 1400 knew. They thus directly dispute the conclusions of Soon and Baliunas, which they quote in their paper like a “vitiated study” (“flawed study”).

Ideological handling The publication of the article of Soon and Baliunas in a review at reading panel is regarded today as a true handling by part of the scientific community because of the methodological errors made by its authors. The editor in chief of Climate Research, Hans von Storch, resigned on July 28 besides because the direction of the review refused the insertion of a grateful comment to him that the publication of the article Baliunas and Soon should not have been accepted by the reading panel. Whereas Soon and Baliunas never hid their close links with the American néo-conservatives, this business could end up splashing the Bush team.

Shown by the recent parliamentary report/ratio Waxman to have had on several occasions recourse to the scientific intoxication to justify its decisions (or not-decisions) the most discussed, the American government continuous to press its sales leaflets on this doubtful article.
